The LoRa Alliance, a leading global organization for Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN), has recognized a team of brilliant minds who have played a significant role in the adoption of IPv6 over LoRaWAN.

The team includes:

The LoRa Alliance is dedicated to enabling IoT solutions that support the growing demands for low-cost, low-power, and long-range communication.

SCHC, or Static Context Header Compression, is a technology that opens up massive new opportunities for the LoRaWAN ecosystem. It enables the use of Internet Protocols in LoRaWAN, making it eligible for many new vertical high-value-added massive IoT ecosystems. This expansion enlarges the reach of LoRaWAN to include electricity, gas, and water smart metering, where DLMS (Device Language Message Specification) requirement is growing. This expansion also nourishes the official liaison with the DLMS User Association to position LoRaWAN as a standard connectivity option for a whole new ecosystem.

The team recognized by the Alliance has contributed at every step of the way, from technical specifications to certification enablement. In record time, the team produced several technical documents that specified and certified the use of SCHC in LoRaWAN.

The LoRa Alliance team's key milestones were achieved in an unprecedented record time of 18 months - from the opening of the IPv6 task force in April 2021 to the public announcement of the SCHC certification in November 2022. Along the way, the team produced specifications for IPv6 over LoRaWAN, a SCHC certification test plan, and a SCHC library for LCTT (LoRaWAN Certification Test Tool) to enable SCHC certification. They also contributed to the LoRaWAN certification protocol to include SCHC certification and provided validation of tests.

In addition, the team produced the architecture and requirements for a LoRaWAN Testbed (TR011) that would enable DLMS UA to certify DLMS-based meters for LoRaWAN connectivity. This also opens up to new market opportunities, for e.g. in smart home (Matter), smart building (BACnet, KNX), and smart Industry (Modbus, OPC-UA, …).

The expansion of LoRaWAN's capabilities through SCHC technology is sure to bring new opportunities and innovations to the IoT space, and we look forward to seeing how this technology continues to evolve in the future.
